Established in 1990. Renamed in 1997

Locating at the east foothill of Guanyin Mountain in Kaohsiung County, I-Shou University (ISU) was established by Mr. Lin I-Shou in 1986 for commemorating his mother and benefiting the villages and towns where he grew up. Its predecessor, Kaohsiung Polytechnic Institute (KPI), started to recruit students in August 1990; in 1997, after being approved by the Ministry of Education, KPI was formally renamed as I-Shou University.

Being rapidly expanded in the past decade, ISU already has College of Science and Engineering, College of Electrical Engineering & Information Science, College of Management, and College of Language and Communication; furthermore, the College of Medical Science is also under planning.
Dr. Fu Shen-Li, who has been serving as the President of ISU since the beginning of KPI, always leads all the faculty and students to pursue a high-quality teaching and academic service with his highest self-expectation.

In September 2006, Yenchao Campus, which is next to E-DA Hospital and preserved for the building of the Medical School, was opened to accommodate all the departments of the College of Medical Science.

Over 80 percent of our faculty has a Ph. D. degree, while we consider research areas and practical experience as the major criteria when recruiting new teachers. All of our programs are based on the principle of 'respecting both theories and practices, placing importance equally on teaching and experiment'. The entire faculty is also encouraged to lead students in doing interdisciplinary researches which contain academic and practical values.
